Porcje Tory na ostatni i obecny tydzień zawierają jedne z najważniejszych, fundamentalnych fragmentów, jakie znajdujemy w naszej tradycji religijnej. Obie zawierają dwa spośród trzech akapitów naszej centralnej, biblijnej codziennej modlitwy i zarazem wyznania naszej wiary, Szema w Achawata: „Słuchaj, Izraelu, Pan, Bóg nasz, Pan jest jeden” (Pwt 6,4) to początek pierwszego ustępu, a „Jeśli więc będziecie przestrzegać przykazań, które ja wam dziś daję, miłując Boga waszego יהוה i służąc Mu całym sercem i duszą waszą […]” (Pwt 11,13) stanowi początek drugiego akapitu.[…]

Thoughts on Parashat Eikev 5785

Our Torah portions for the last week and for this week contain one of the most important, cornerstone passages we found in our religious tradition. They both contain two of the three paragraphs of our central, biblical everyday prayer and the declaration of our faith, Shema v’Ahavta: “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one” (Deut. 6:4) is the opening of the first paragraph and “If, then, you obey the commandments that I enjoin upon you this day, loving your God יהוה and serving [God] with all your heart and soul […] (Deut. 11:13) is the opening of the second paragraph.

Jedną z podstawowych zasad rabinicznego rozumienia Tory jest to, że żaden akapit, żaden werset, żadne słowo, a nawet żadna litera nie jest zbędna – jest tam zawsze z jakiegoś powodu i zawsze coś znaczy. A kiedy Tora coś powtarza, wymaga naszej uwagi, ponieważ zdarza się to względnie rzadko. W Paraszy Matot Masei powracamy do historii córek Selofchada – Machli, Tircy, Chogli, Milki i Noa. Ich prośba jest omówiona w naszej paraszy z poprzedniego tygodnia – Pinchas – kiedy zwracają się one do Mojżesza z prośbą o dziedzictwo po ojcu. W porcji Tory na ten tydzień powracamy do tej historii.[…]

Thoughts on Parashat Matot-Masei 5785

One of the core principles of rabbinic understanding of the Torah is that no paragraph, no verse, no word and even no letter is redundant — it’s there for a purpose and it always means something. AND when the Torah repeats, it really demands our attention because it’s rare. In Parashat Matot-Masei, we revisit the story of the daughters of Zelophhad—Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah. Their plea is discussed in our last week parasha—Pinchas—when they approached Moshe to request their father’s inheritance. Now, here they are again.[…]
