Thoughts on Parashat Vayakhel-Pekudei 5786

Picture this: We are finishing reading the Book of Exodus. The Israelites are finally building the Mishkan—the fancy portable synagogue-on-wheels where God’s presence is going to crash on their couch. And because this week is Shabbat HaChodesh, we also get that bonus maftir: “This month shall be for you the beginning of months.” God basically hits the reset button on the calendar and says, “Nissan is now Month One. Pesach prep starts… now!”

So what do building a holy and sophisticated project and prepping for the world’s fastest escape room have in common? Both are about getting ready—but not the “did I remember to buy more matzah?” kind of ready. The deeper, “maybe I should stop doom-scrolling and actually free myself” kind.

Let’s start with Vayakhel. Right after the Golden Calf fiasco—where everyone panicked, melted their jewelry, and basically invented the world’s worst group chat decision—Moses doesn’t sulk. He calls a town hall: “Vayakhel!” Gather round, people! And the very first thing he says? “Shabbat, guys. Six days work, seventh day Netflix-and-chill-with-God. No emails, no Amazon Prime deliveries, no building anything.”

Why kick off the Mishkan instructions with Shabbat? Because the Mishkan required 39 kinds of creative labor—the exact same stuff you’re not allowed to do on Shabbat. It’s like the Torah is winking at us: “Hey, before you go full DIY on My house, remember how to stop. Rest is holy too. You’re not a machine—even if your boss thinks you are.”

Then comes the fun part: the donations. “Everyone whose heart was stirred brought stuff.” Gold, yarn, mirrors (yes, mirrors—apparently the women said, “We’re contributing with our essential accessories!”), wood, you name it. They brought so much that Moses had to put out a sign: “Stop giving! We’re overflowing! Take your earrings back!”

After the Golden Calf, where they gave gold out of fear and bad vibes, now they’re giving out of joy. It’s like going from toxic ex energy to “I’m in therapy and thriving” energy. That’s redemption: turning panic-giving into heart-giving.

Now flip to Shabbat HaChodesh. God tells Moses and Aaron: “Ha-chodesh ha-zeh lachem rosh chodashim”—this month is the head of your months. Not January 1 with champagne and terrible never-working resolutions. Nissan—with Pesach, freedom, matzah crumbs everywhere. The year starts with getting out of Egypt, because real new beginnings happen when you leave the narrow places behind.

Pesach prep isn’t just “find the chametz and curse the cabinets.” It’s spiritual decluttering. The Mishkan was built to fix the Golden Calf mess—to make space for God again. Pesach asks: What’s your personal Golden Calf these days? Too much screen time? That grudge you’ve been carrying since 2019? The belief that you’re “not enough” unless you’re booked 24/7? Time to clean that out. No blowtorch required—just a little honesty and maybe some therapy matzah.

Here’s the beautiful punchline: both the Mishkan and Pesach teach that God doesn’t live in a palace up in the clouds. God dwells in the middle of messy, imperfect people. The Mishkan was portable—God travels with us. Freedom isn’t a one-and-done; it’s a yearly software update. Every Nisan, God says, “Update available: Version Freer-You 5786. Install now?”

So, my lighthearted Pesach prep plan for us this week:

  1. Shabbat like you mean it. Put the phone in airplane mode. Pretend it’s 1313 BCE—no notifications from Pharaoh. Taste real rest. Your soul will thank you (and so will your family).
  2. Spring clean with sass. As you hunt chametz, ask: “What puffed-up nonsense am I still carrying?” Toss one small thing—literally or figuratively. Bonus points if it’s that expired jar of gefilte fish from two seders ago.
  3. Give from the heart, not the guilt. Whether it’s showing up for shul, calling your aunt, or finally donating those jeans you haven’t worn since Obama was president—do it because it feels good, not because “I should.” That’s Mishkan energy.

When the Mishkan was done, the cloud came down and filled it. God showed up. Not because it was perfect, but because the people made space—by resting, by giving freely, by showing up.

As we barrel toward Pesach, may we prepare the same way: a little less frenzy, a little more fun, a lot more heart. May we say, like our ancestors in Egypt: “This month? For us? It’s go-time. A new update for Freedom is available.”

Shabbat Shalom, Chodesh tov,

May your chametz hunt be short, your brisket moist, and your liberation accompanied by laughter.
