The Baal Shem Tov was a gifted singer. He considered singing as worship of God, for music touches the soul. He often led his disciples in song, especially at the Shabbat table. Sometimes he asked them to close their eyes and put their hands on each other’s shoulders as they sang, so that they were all connected in a sacred circle. He said, “When you put your hand on another person’s shoulder, you physically express the Mitsvah to love your neighbor as yourself.” The Baal Shem Tov also revived the circle dance among Jewish people, saying: “In a circle all are equal; there is no first and no last.” From The Light and Fire of the Baal Shem Tov by Rabbi Yitzchak Buxbaum
Once the Baal Shem Tov and several of his disciples were walking in the fields when they heard the sound of a flute. The Baal Shem Tov listened intently as the shepherd boy played the melody over and over again. Then he hummed the simple melody and started softly singing several different Biblical verses to the melody. When his disciples objected to singing holy words to the profane music of a non-Jewish shepherd; the Baal Shem Tov rebuked them saying: This melody was composed by the spirit of King David himself. Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov, died in the year 1760. Fifty years later (1810), Fryderyk Chopin and Reform Judaism were born. Between 2010 and 2060 the spirits of the Baal Shem Tov, Chopin and Reform Judaism, will combine to reinvigorate Polish Jewry for the 21st century.
HEBRAJSKIE SŁOWA SZUKAJĄ POLSKICH MELODII
Baal Szem Tow był utalentowanym śpiewakiem. Uważał śpiew za sposób wyrażania uwielbienia Bogu, gdyż muzyka dotyka duszy. Często zachęcał swoich zwolenników do śpiewu, zwłaszcza przy szabatowym stole. Czasem prosił ich aby, śpiewając, zamknęli oczy i położyli dłonie na ramionach sąsiadów tak, by połączyć się w kręgu. Mówił, „Gdy kładziecie dłonie na ramionach drugiego człowieka, fizycznie wyrażacie micwę, by kochać bliźniego jak siebie samego”.
